This exhibition features murals created at the invitation of Museum De Lakenhal by twenty leading artists of varying national origin. The wall paintings all build on the ideas of Theo van Doesburg, who launched his De Stijl magazine in Leiden exactly a century ago. The exhibition is the work of guest curators Iemke van Dijk and Guido Winkler.

One hundred years after the birth of the De Stijl movement, Museum De Lakenhal is taking stock of what has been achieved. The murals are being exhibited in the town’s Pieterskerkhof area, while a scale model of the Maison d’Artiste can be seen on Het Gerecht. The Maison d’Artiste was designed by Theo van Doesburg and Cornelis van Eesteren in Paris in 1923.

De kunstenaars in de tentoonstelling In Stijl werken in meer of mindere mate abstract, zonder dat zij zich conformeren aan de uitgangspunten van De Stijl met haar primaire kleuren en strakke vormentaal.

In 2017 is het honderd jaar geleden dat De Stijl werd opgericht, de legendarische kunstenaars- en architectengroep rond Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondriaan en Gerrit Rietveld. Hun theorieën over kleur en ruimte leidden tot een revolutionaire, volledig abstracte beeldtaal die een wereld van totale harmonie moest brengen. De Stijl werd in 1931 opgeheven, maar is tot op de dag van vandaag voor kunstenaars, vormgevers en architecten een inspiratiebron.

Abstract Wall Paintings III is een tentoonstelling met hedendaagse abstracte kunst op muren, georganiseerd voor en door kunstenaars. Het is een internationaal project, gelijk in tijd, thema en titel. Verschillende kunstruimtes in binnen- en buitenland maken dit parallelle project mogelijk.

De tentoonstelling viert, met vele andere tentoonstellingen in heel Nederland, het honderdjarig jubileum van kunststroming De Stijl. Deze kunststroming, waarvan Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg en Gerrit Rietveld de meest bekende vertegenwoordigers zijn, heeft wereldwijde invloed gehad op de ontwikkeling van de beeldende kunst en vormgeving.

Abstract Wall Paintings III toont abstracte kunst, honderd jaar na de oprichting van De Stijl, en is daarom vanzelfsprekend internationaal, en in hedendaagse vorm. Het resultaat is een monumentale ‘staalkaart’ die de diversiteit van abstracte kunst van nu laat zien. Bezoekers die Mondriaan zoeken zullen vast bedrogen uitkomen, maar Mondriaan zou zijn ogen uitkijken.

In Perspectives on Space, LaKaserna presents three artists each focusing in their own way on space, perspective and site-specific pieces: Henriëtte van ’t Hoog, Michael Wright and María José Ramírez Ramírez.

 

 

The multi-coloured geometrical objects of Henriëtte van ’t Hoog (Amsterdam, 1943), although made of zinc and firmly attached to the walls, seem to float, to emit light, and to interact with the wall and the surrounding space.

María José Ramírez Ramírez (Bilbao, 1957) manifests herself in this exhibition both as its curator and as one of the participating artists. Her paintings and photographs have been produced specifically for the LaKaserna exhibition site and create an installation that reflects the title of the show.

The video Zip is the newest creation sprung from the ten-year collaboration, under the name Wright & Van ’t Hoog, between Henriëtte van ’t Hoog and the British photographer and video-artist Michael Wright (Hertfordshire, 1955), who focuses in his work on the physical and psychological experience of space.

Also on view is the video-installation Dazzle by Wright & Van ’t Hoog, in which the image is projected from three different angles. The music composed for this installation by Philip Mead adds to a fascinating juxtaposition of light, colour, rhythm and space.
